Request for Proposals
For $10,000 Case Research Grants

The North American Case Research Association (NACRA) is a nonprofit, voluntary professional association whose mission is to promote excellence in case research, writing, and teaching in business and other administrative disciplines.  NACRA will make at least two grants to support case research during the 2007-2008 academic year.  

Funding Categories 

Grant proposals may target one or a combination of the funding categories described below.

  • Using Cases to Build Theory Grant:  These grants support research that utilizes case studies to generate new theories in business and administrative disciplines such as accounting, business & society/ethics, business policy & strategy, education, finance & economics, information technology management, international business, marketing, not-for-profit, health care, social work, operations/supply chain management, organizational behavior, organizational theory, human resource management, and small business management/entrepreneurship.  The final product of the grant research is expected to be a theory-building article accepted for publication in the Case Research Journal or another appropriate journal. 
  • Teaching Case Development Grant:  These grants support the development of decision-focused teaching case(s) based on field research and a comprehensive analysis (instructor’s manual or teaching note).  Fictitious cases will not be funded. Disguised cases are permitted. Funding will be awarded for projects that have not been previously presented or published at the time of the grant application.  Cases should address issues in business and other administrative disciplines such as those listed above.

Submission Guidelines

 

Submission Deadline: June 1, 2007

Submission Procedure: Email submission cover sheet and grant proposal to dxe12@psu.edu.

Submission Cover Sheet: Please include the following information:

  • Project Title
  • Name, title, affiliation, and contact information for principal investigator. Names, titles, and affiliations of co-investigators.
  • Category of grant submission (Theory-Building or Teaching Case Development, or both.)
  • Indicate if any of the investigators are current NACRA members (not required.)

Grant Proposal:

  1. Describe the proposed research, including the relevant discipline, theoretical domain, case research site with discussion of access status, and research methodology. If possible, include a signed agreement to participate from the subject organization. (1-2 pages)
  2. Describe the experience of all investigators with case research and writing. Newcomers to case research and writing are encouraged to apply in collaboration with an experienced case researcher. (1-2 pages)
  3. Attach curriculum vitae for all investigators.
  4. Include a time line for the proposed research that incorporates the reporting guidelines listed below.
  5. Include a budget for the grant amount that meets the budget guidelines listed below.

Eligibility Criteria:

The principal investigator should be a full-time faculty member or doctoral student in a college or university. NACRA membership is not required at the time of application, but will be included in conference registration.

Areas of Support:

NACRA seeks to support field case research for purposes of theory building and/ or development of teaching cases. The context of the field research may be any business or other administrative discipline. Grants may support doctoral dissertation research or faculty research in progress, if the reporting and budget guidelines listed below are met. However, research previously presented or published is not eligible.

Reporting Guidelines:

Grant recipients will submit a progress report on their work for review and meet with grant administrators for feedback at the NACRA annual meeting, October 18-20, 2007 in Denver, CO. A final research paper and/or teaching case with instructor’s manual should be submitted in June 2008 for the fall 2008 conference that will be held in Durham, NH.

Budget Guidelines: The $10,000 grant may be used to cover the following expenses: Research expenses (mailing/ telephone/ supplies/ copying/ postage); Research assistants; Travel expenses (including to the research site and to the NACRA meetings); Salary supplement for investigators. Grant funding may not be used to cover administrative overhead.

Grant Timeline:

June 1, 2007    Submission Deadline

July 1, 2007     Notification of Grant Recipients with first installment of grant funding ($2,500).

October 1, 2007          Progress Report submitted for review.

October 18-20, 2007.  Meeting with grant administrators for feedback on progress report. Second installment of grant funding ($2,500).

June 2008        Submission of research paper and/or teaching case for 2008 NACRA conference. Third installment of grant funding ($2,500).

December 1, 2008       Revised research paper and/or teaching case submitted to the Case Research Journal or other appropriate outlet. Final installment of grant funding ($2,500).
